Timeless Design Talk #6 - Mar 5, 2026
Naperville Preservation engaged a historic preservation consultant, Preservation Futures, to document a historic survey of Tosi homes in Naperville, to catalog the contributions by this noted builder. The survey is complete and Naperville Preservation is now in the process of compiling it into a survey book similar to the one down for the East Highlands and River Haven Estates. This books will be made available for purchase at the cost to print.
The Driehaus Foundation, the Landmarks Illinois Barbara C. and Thomas E. Donnelley II Preservation Fund, the City of Naperville Special Events and Community Arts Commission and the Republic Bank of Chicago generously gave grants to Naperville Preservation to fund conducting the survey work. Our appreciation goes out to all those organizations as well as our donors.
Don A. Tosi was a prominent postwar designer and homebuilder recognized for his modernist inspired home designs. As a protege of renowned mid-century modernist architect Bruce Goff, Tosi served as general contractor for the construction of the Goff-designed Ruth Van Sickle Ford House (1950) in Aurora, Illinois. Following completion of the Ford House, Tosi established a name for himself as a creative, oftentimes eccentric, designer and builder of custom suburban single-family homes. Tosi's unique built legacy can be seen throughout the Aurora and Naperville subdivisions erected between 1950 and 1980, particularly in the West Highlands, Maplebrook, and Cress Creek neighborhoods. Being more than 50 years old these homes are now considered "historic" by City of Naperville Historic Preservation standards.
A preliminary list of houses potentially designed by Tosi has been compiled and the number is over 70. Many of these homes are located in subdivisions with ongoing “tear-downs” being built, so documenting these unique homes needs to be done before more are lost.
The homes built by Don Tosi are an important part of Naperville’s history. They exemplify Mid-century Modern style, a significant design movement. Mid-century architecture was frequently employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America's post-war suburbs. Tosi homes are perhaps the ultimate examples of Mid-century Modern in Naperville. It is important to document them.
In 2024 and 2025, Naperville Preservation received grants from the Driehaus Foundation, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, City of Naperville Special Events and Community Arts Commission, and New Republic Bank in order for Preservation Futures to conduct a survey of Naperville's remaining Tosi homes. The survey will be presented to the Naperville community through a public presentation, as done previously.
Naperville Preservation is consulting with Friends of Tosi Homeowners and doing public outreach by a "Spot the Tosi" contest to identify as many Tosi Napaerville homes as possible.
Stay tuned... Copies of the printed survey books will be donated to Naperville Public Libraries, Driehaus Foundation, City of Naperville, to name a few places. Other copies will be available for sale. Naperville Preservation with also have an event centered around the event.
